What Fine People We Are!

In our class discussion, we talked about the use of puns on words with multiple meanings. As we progressed to talk about the usage of the word 'fine' and its various meanings, we highlighted that one of its meanings refer to the monetary penalty for unacceptable behaviour.

What are your views on the need for such penalties to remind us of good behaviours?
Are we capable of maintaining good behaviours even when "no one's watching"?

There is a need to have penalties to remind us of good behaviours as people would think twice if there is a penalty. If there is no penalty, the country will be lawless, and people all over the world would not like Singapore.

I think that some citizens are capable of maintaining good behaviours even when "no one's watching". But we must still have a penalty for those who are not capable of maintaining good behaviours even when “no one’s watching”.

Yes, good behaviour is indeed very impressive. When I encountered people doing nice gestures, like saying hello or thank you with a smile, picking up litters from the floor to put in the bin, being considerate, i am impressed. If Singaporean can do this without any enforcement, that is great. Like you said, sometimes we need laws to maintain. Guess, we need to work harder on this area.
