What Fine People We Are!

In our class discussion, we talked about the use of puns on words with multiple meanings. As we progressed to talk about the usage of the word 'fine' and its various meanings, we highlighted that one of its meanings refer to the monetary penalty for unacceptable behaviour.

What are your views on the need for such penalties to remind us of good behaviours?
Are we capable of maintaining good behaviours even when "no one's watching"?

There is a need to have penalties to remind us of good behaviours as people would think twice if there is a penalty. If there is no penalty, the country will be lawless, and people all over the world would not like Singapore.

I think that some citizens are capable of maintaining good behaviours even when "no one's watching". But we must still have a penalty for those who are not capable of maintaining good behaviours even when “no one’s watching”.

Rainforest- Decreasing

Rainforests are very valuable. Scientists predict that there are many types medicine not found in rainforests. Also, many food items or furniture comes from rainforests. Unfortunately, there are less and less rainforests in the world. This is because people are cutting trees in the rainforests. They do that to get the wood to make paper. Also they cut trees to make space for cities and farms. This is very threatening as there will be global warming, and animals would lose their homes, which means some animals will get extinct. Also, lots of our food items would be lost too, together with furniture. One of the furniture is rattan chairs, which are made of rattan.

Book Review-Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone

Harry is a wizard. He survived a powerful curse by Voldermort. As his mother and father died when Voldermort tried to kill them, he lived with his uncle and aunt who treated him very badly. He did not know that he was a wizard till one day, Hagrid, the keeper of the keys for Hogwarts comes to tell him that he is a wizard and he is enrolled to Hogwarts where he learned magic. Together with his two best friends, Ron and Hermione, they saved the Philosopher’s Stone from Lord Voldermort. I won’t tell you the details, so that it would not spoil the fun reading it.

This book is very nice and interesting to read. The story plot is also very complete.

Joke-superman

Why is Superman's suit so tight?

Because his suit has the alphabet S (small size)

Lying

When I say that “I am lying now”, my statement is illogical. If I was lying about telling lies, that means I was speaking the true when I said “I am lying now”. But I am lying! When I was telling the truth, then I am not lying. But if I was telling the truth, then the sentence is illogical. Frustrating?

Standard Singapore English and Singapore Colloquial English

Speaking Standard English
In the audio clip we heard in class, one of the characters said,"One found the need to learn code-switching the most difficult."From there, we have discussed that the goal of English educators in Singapore should be to develop speakers who are able to code-switch between Standard Singapore English (SSE) and Singapore Colloquial English (SCE).
Why do you think this goal is important?
What are your opinions on the need to speak in Standard Singapore English?
posted by CH GEPers 2006

Imagine that you go to the hawker centre and you speak to the hawker in Standard Singapore English (SSE). They may think that you are trying to act funnily and may not even understand what you are talking about. Now imagine that you are on a trip overseas and you speak to the waiter in Singapore Colloquial English (SCE), he may not even understand what you are talking about. That is why we must learn how to code switch-because people may not understand you or they may think that you are rude.

It is very important to know how to speak Standard Singapore English (SSE) for the people overseas may not know what you are talking about when you speak Singapore Colloquial English (SCE).
